Thanks for the input Blaasaab.
Going to go with 2 quarts minimum. Decided to go with mineral based fluid, for the following reason: cost/benefit ratio. The fluid cost of two liters of the mothers milk approaches almost 1/2 the cost of the re-manufactured pump.
Fluid will be flushed until clear, new pump installed, then flushed again.
Found a Pentosin CHF 11S MSDS sheet listing the components. The safety sheet was not listed on their site. Found it on a US distributor called Worldpac. (I do not like posting links). Type in Pentosin CHF 11S MSDS into your fav search engine.
As follows:
CAS# 68649-11-6 1- Decene, dimer, hydrogenated <75%
CAS# 64742-46-7 Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated middle <5%
I do not have an account to search CAS#'s. If someone does, be my guest.
The fluid is listed as biodegradable. Suspecting bio (vegetable or nut oil) oil, but cannot get the CAS # confirmation to be sure.
One of those is Zinc. Originally thought it might be fancy brake fluid. Not the case, because DOT 3 and 4 brake fluids are glycol based. DOT 5 is silicone based. Those different based fluids are not compatible if mixed. But with a thorough system flush, one could switch to another type for whatever reason.
Using same idea, will use a conventional mineral based oil with a high VI (viscosity index) that includes zinc.
According to the Prestone and Valvolene sites:
The Honda/Import type power steering type fluids have a whole slew of ingredients that the basic power steering fluids do not contain. Will not be using those.
Will also not be using any type that contains "leak stopping" conditioning ingredients. Seals in my rack do not leak, and don't want stuff in there to swell the seals for no reason.
My choice will be the "conventional" type. It has the zinc without all the other additives. The Valvoline will be used, since it has a better VI.
The Pentosin CHF 11S and their "202" are compatible with each other, while their mineral oil will not mix with either. Could not determine if the synth oils were Category III, IV or V. Or to determine if they are vegetable oil. I don't doubt the quality. (Look up any hydraulic fluid used for tractors, industry, etc. The components are mineral oil and zinc. Or bio based and zinc). Not knocking bio oils. Castor beans are wonderful.
Am I recommending that anyone else use my choice for power steering fluid? No.
After repairing the steering situation, many other issues (money) need to be addressed with my vehicle. Repairing those that require the most exigency first.
