I stand corrected - Saab pistons are free-floating, you should be able to assemble/disassemble the pistons from the rods without issue.
There is inherently nothing wrong with used con rods. They can be magnafluxed to make sure they are not cracked, but they are probably fine.
If the pistons and bores are really OK, then it might be worth a try at replacing the conrods. I would take all 4 rods to a machine shop to have them balanced and checked for size. Over time, the big end of a rod will become ovalized and usually during a rebuild the shop will "re-size" them by taking a little from the rod and the cap mating surfaces then re-boring to spec.
But the costs will add up: let's say $100 for used rods, $50 for rings, $70 for big end bearings, $140-200 to the machine shop. Assume another $50 for misc gaskets and fluids...that's a good way towards a new engine.
