funny whistling sound at low boost Posted by camm [Email] (#191) [Profile/Gallery] (more from camm) on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 16:16:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Car is a '99 9-3 SE, 140k mi, manual.
The car has developed a funny sound when the boost needle is just going from white to yellow (essentially from right at regular atmospheric pressure to boost). The best way I can describe the sound is like one note being blown on a harmonica; it's not a whistle or a whoosh, nor is it a honk, definitely a "wheeeeeee" type noise.
The sound occurs with the needle going in either direction - going on to and coming off of boost. Typically the sound is most pronounced when I gradually get on to or off of boost - it rarely occurs under hard acceleration, and does not occur at all when the needle is more than 1/4 of the way into the yellow.
I looked quickly and didn't see any obvious cracks or holes in any hoses from the turbo to the IC and from the IC to the intake manifold.
Anyone have a clue what this is?
