I ended up discussing this with an engineer coworker who has some experience with aircraft gears, and with messing around with cars on his free time. He has seen this often on gearbox drain plug magnets, he said the gooey stuff is essentially powdered steel mixed with gear oil. He explained that as the car runs and the gear teeth mesh tiny bits of steel from the non-perfect surface of the gear teeth break off and collect at the magnet. As the car runs the gear teeth generate this metal powder until the surfaces become essentially highly polished, and then the powder generation rate drops off.
Now as far as the few slivers of metal on the magnet, those are likely shaved off a synchro during a bad shift.
