I have a 2000 9-3 with the exact same symptom. 90k, has always run fine. Doesn't feel like a miss or stumble, it feels like everything goes dead for about a half-second, then normal. Usually crusing- idle and acceleration normal. I was thinking cps or ignition unit.
On another board someone with similar symptoms suggested getting one of those little OBDII readers that send codes to a laptop or a smartphone (ELM327). Plug it in and go for a drive, when it happens it sends a fault code to the receiver. He did that and got the code for the crank position sensor. I have one of the OBDII readers coming to try, they're only like $20.
I'd try plugs, but when it happens it's not like one isn't firing, it's like nothing is firing. It feels like you hit a deer for a split second, then back to normal running.
The only other unusual thing with this car was about two months ago we came out of a restaurant and it wouldn't start. Not a hint of firing, just crank. Tried cranking 5-6 times- nothing. Got out and wiggled the connector plug going to the DI and after a nother try or two it fired right up. Never happend again (or before). I don't think the wiggling helped.
