What might not be clear here is the nonmenclature. I don't know that your mechanic even understands it so he might be feeding you bad info.
There are four SENSORS on the wheels. There is one CONTROL UNIT in the engine compartment. There are NO sensors in the control unit although there are electronics in there that process the signals.
By hooking up a Tech II to the car, a mechanic can read the codes and figure out if it's a wheel sensor OR the control unit.
