You could do a compression check. Some might drop the oil pan to see if there's sludging, and clean it out if there is.
I once borrowed a Ford Escort from a friend. Stopped at the gas station to fill up and thought I'd check the oil. Same experience as you had. Bone dry, and took 4 qts to middle of dipstick. We pulled out the owner's manual and read that the crankcase had a 4 qt capacity, or so. I told him about it, and he continued to drive the car for about 3-4 more years until he sold it.
