'96 900se turbo automatic 130k. Summary to arrive the current state to perhaps help me understand where I may have gone wrong.
Radiator fails at transmission cooler loop causing trans fluid in coolant and coolant in radiator. Removed old radiator.
Flushed out milky trans fluid by draining at plug, refilling then opening 5 qts of Dexron VI, filling transmission while starting and stopping car, allowing it to drain out of the coolant line. Stopped when it ran clear. Replaced radiator.Unable to find Dexron III, all I've read is that Dex VI replaces III, thus I did the flush it while draining from line instead of replacing 3.5 quarts at drain.
Flushed coolant, accidentally splashed flush mix near overflow tank, rinsed down the area. Test drove the car a half mile or so, transmission shifted smooth, just as it did before the work. Drove the car 12 miles to kids school. It shifted smoothly with no indication of anything wrong. Jumped in it 2 1/2 hrs later and drove it not even 1/2 mile when it felt like it just shifted into neutral. Nothing in any gear. Finally had to have it towed.
I went out the next day and it dropped into gear but within a minute it was back to neutral. I discovered it was 1/4" overfilled on the stick (I filled it and checked it while it was on the jack.) Drained a quart or so and added a bit back to bring it to the cold level mark. Still no engage. Noticed that it wants to stall when shifting to neutral or back to park. Opened the electrical connectors thought I saw water on the connector to the neutral safety switch, dried it, no change. Sprayed electrical contact cleaner on both sides, no change. Pulled neutral switch, opened it, it looked clean, dry, and perfectly operational. Reassembled, reinstalled, adjusted. Still no difference.
Is it possible I pumped the torque converter dry? Did I screw the transmission up using Dex VI? It just seems odd that it drove perfectly fine for 12 miles then nothing. If you stuck with me this far thanks for reading it through. I just wanted to include all the details since I've been on a lengthy trail on this one.
