That could be it. Under load the exhaust could be coming out pretty good. And an exhaust leak at the manifold often makes a ticking sound. The studs do break on there own from time to time. If you search the board here or the 9-5 board you should find quite a few references to repairing it. Since the gasket is probably damaged in that area I would remove the exhaust manifold and carefully drill out the broken portion of the stud and then reinstall it all. You can get a kit of replacement studs and nuts for the exhaust manifold.
