My plan is to get a new battery, and bring along a spare from my the car of my friend who is coming with me, plus cables.
Unfortunately, it turns out I answered my own question today. My battery died after 4 start-ups within a short distance of driving in between. Last stop was my dentist, who fixed my tooth and then gave me a jump start. This very much reinforced the decision to get a new battery prior to the trip. And yes you can jump start an OG 9-3 without damaging anything if you do it right.
