Second key not working

Alert me when someone posts in this thread:

Hugin is a 2000 9-3 (black, of course).
When I bought it, the seller had only one key, so I had them make another before I bought it. The original key has the banana remote, while the new key has the integrated remote.

This morning, the new key would not start the car (dash lights on etc., no crank, no fire). I went back in, got the old key, and it started normally.

So there's clearly an issue with the chip in one key not being recognized by the TWICE. What's the likely cause? I have a bunch of theories (in no particular order).

1--it was really cold this morning, and the new key will work OK when it gets warmer.

2--the battery in the new key is weak or dead (but isn't the chip passive?) That key hasn't been used in months.

3--the battery in the theft alarm is dead (I get the "service theft alarm" alert on startup).

4--the TWICE has forgotten the key because I haven't used the remote lock/unlock in two years (see 3).

5--the TWICE has forgotten the key because I usually use the key with the banana and I haven't used the newer one in months.

6--there's some kind of RF attenuation going on because of the big brass orchestra ticket on the ring with the new key (but it's been on the keyring as long as I've had the car)

7--something else??
