With leaded fuels, everything was tan...
Anyways, with the turbos, the plugs get carbon deposits when under boost and short trips. When on the highway, they tend to burn clean.
For an normaally asperated engine, I agree, tan would be good. But a heat range of which produces tan in a NA engine, might not be hot enought to get rid of the deposits created while under boost.
I share your sceptacism (sp?). When I first pulled them and saw how clean they were, I was a bit shocked. But they are performing great, and the ground electrode shows no visable erosion at all. And the center electrode, well there almost isn't one. Platinum wire in ceramic.
Many folks are running heat range 6 with the standard plugs. I have not seen others reporting on the appearance of their plugs.
