I'd been chasing an intermittent oil pressure light on warm idle in my 2003 9-5 for several years now. The engine also has loud ticking noise (presumably from the valvetrain) on cold startup and warm idle. Tried thicker oil (changed from 5-30 syn to 5-40 syn) and while that took care of the oil pressure light, it didn't do anything for the ticking hoise. I had the oil pressure relief valve changed, and that didn't do anything either.

I finally had the oil pan dropped at ~170k mi. No sludge was reported. A couple of crankshaft bearings were dropped for inspection, and no damage was observed. I had the pickup tube o-ring changed at the same time after reading up on the online forums. Now, the cold start ticking noise has largely disappeared and I haven't yet heard anymore ticking noise during warm idle. Encouraging so far, and I hope it stays this way...
