Actually, I checked my records and I had all of the pads changed about 15,000 miles ago. When I had the work done the mechanic told me that the front rotors were right at the minimum spec, so he couldn't turn them.
I opted not to have him replace the rotors, as it was Xmas and I needed my spare cash for other things. He told me that it might make some noise, but that there wouldn't be any mechanical problem with doing so.
Now I'm thinking that the rotors might have chewed up the pads and caused the premature wear. Does this sound reasonable?
Bottom line, it looks like I'll have to shell out for the whole job now--I'm sure my grandfather had an appropriate cliche doing a job the right way the first time.
