Get dedicated severe winter treads, especially for Boston weather. Alpins or Blizzaks are a good choice. Try tire rack for rim/tire combos. If you have steel rims available to you, you might want to try BJ'S for Arctic Alpins--- their prices, with the 10 buck balance/warranty wheel deal are very good, though the sizes are somewhat limited. Be careful with high speed handling on winter tires--- it suffers as the rubber compounds are quite soft--- takes getting used to. However, you'll beg for snow/ice, and the ability to out run and OUT-BRAKE (!!) all the idiots in their SUVs. Blizzaks were invincible last winter on a 60 mile trip to work in central MD/PA. PS--- make sure to ROTATE every 5k. This soft rubber takes a beating, and you'll greatly extend your tire life. And wait as long as you can to mount (maybe mid december for MA) and take them off asap-- (early March or sooner?).
