If the ground was bum, more than one thing in the dash would be wacko. The fuel tank sensor does not depend on a ground at the back of the car, but the fuel pump motor does. (accoring to Haynes)
There are two connectors to the fuel tank, with inline plugs that are at the forward edge of the fuel tank, perhaps up out of reach. You can get under there and look for dammage or a connector that is not fully engaged.
The fuel tank needs to be removed to get at the fuel pump. The sensor and pump are integrated, and expensive. There was a related post in the last week or so. In there I suggested some diagnostic possibilites. Fuel sensor problems are not seen on this BB very often, but now we have two recent cases. Pulling the dash is not trivial. You have to remove the air bag and then the steering wheel. Has any electrical work been done in the dash area?
