Like Bryan said, lots of things can cause the clunking. In my case, at least part of the problem is/was due to the strut housing loosening up after the install of Koni inserts. At least that solved the problem for two days...
A common problem on early cars was broken strut mounts, mine were fine when the struts were installed. Loose lower subframes have also been found to be the culprit.
More info on your clunk will help. Big bumps, small bumps, low speed, high speed, both sides or just one, clunk while turning, reversing, tap vs. clunk, you get the idea. These are really hard to nail down, so don't get discouraged. I've put a couple hundred dollars into exorcising the clunk in my car to no avail, yet.
Ed G posted a TSB on front end clunks in response to a post of mine a couple of weeks ago. Do your symptoms match any of those? Mine didn't, alas.
