In California, we have perfect roads everywhere. No potholes! We also have plenty of electricity! Just kidding... ;-)
I find it quite interesting that you use the foglights to spot potholes. That is a new application to me.
Considering the short range of the fog lights, up to what speed can you see the potholes in time to get around them?
The same questoin applies to tight forrest roads. By the time you see a fox or any other obstacle in your fog lights at highway speed, it is too late to stop or even get around it.
You are fooling yourself into believing you have a safety margin (that's exactly what I read between the lines of your response). In reality, you don't see as far ahead as without foglights, because your eye adjusts to that bright area right in front, and does not notice fine contrasts further ahead.
Your technique might work for low speeds, but once you get over city speed I firmly believe you are taking a huge additional risk.
