ticking under hood

I have a ticking sound that I think is coming from the valve cover area. Varies with RsPM. Started off yesterday morning sounding like an analogue wristwatch, but after driving home (150km) it got a lot louder - a ticking symphony with more ticks in the mix. I really shouldn't have driven home methinks.
Lots of oil that was changed 2000 km ago. Changed the plugs just last week(could it be a loose/bad plug?).
Also, I just started it up in the garage to isolate further and I think it is backfiring.
I have a small leak of what appears to be a mixture of oil and water or coolant. One or two small, quarter-sized pools that drip off the oil pan by the plug overnight. The consistency is too thin to be straight oil. Had a lot gushing out last month and the mech. said it was just a loose hose that he tightened up. Seemed to fix. What Loose hose would have a mixture of oil/coolant? Or was it coolant mixing with oil on the block while dripping down to the outside of the oil pan?
Hoping the verbose description of my symptoms might help you saab gurus steer me in the right direction.
