When to change cooling hoses? Posted by aizzo [Email] (#1220) [Profile/Gallery] (more from aizzo) on Mon, 1 Jul 2002 16:32:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 1995 900SE (V6) with 101,000 miles on it. The car has been serviced by the "local" dealer since new. With the last timing belt change (~95,000 in 02/02) the water pump was also replaced. At that time the dealer didn't call my attention to any issues with the cooling system hoses.
I recently took the care to a local independent shop to have the car aligned. This shop gave it a once over and is urging ("How many miles do you have do drive home?" "oh, I'd say about 7" "You better keep a close eye on that temperature gauge!"...). I was shown that the top radiator hose was mushy (how does one make a distinction between "mushy" and "soft" as I believe "mushy == bad", "soft == good"). Assuming that the hoses are bad the total bill for parts (almost all hoses, not sure exactly which ones, I don't have in the info in front of me) and labor comes out to ~$800.
They are also recommending replacing the thermostat (it has never been done), which I gather on the V6 is rather painful (should have been done with the timing belt?) so with parts and labor ~$300. What do you all think about this? Should I get a second opinion (from the dealer or another independent)? Does the cost sound reasonable? etc...
Thanks and sorry for the rather long post-
Alan
