So, I asked this indie if I could bring in my own parts to save a little $. The answer was NO, and I was given the analogy of it being like bringing your own food into a restaurant and asking them to cook it. He noted that they make money not only on labor but on parts too. So, then I asked him to fax me a formal estimate of the work to be done. Prior to this we had only gone over the work verbally, and he had pulled up the parts on the All Data CD (and the time estimates too, then padded some of them) while I was sitting in his office. He also called in the parts to get a price estimate. All in all I spent about 1.5 hours going over all of this with him (including time waiting for him to get to me, then taking a personal phone call from overseas etc).
He said he would fax me the estimate. A little while later he left me a message indicating he was not going to fax me the estimate thinking that he had spent enough time going over everything verbally at the shop. I really think he was suspicious that all I wanted was the parts list so I could go out and buy the parts and do the work myself. That was not the reason, I don't have the time to do this work. When asked to put out ~$1200, I like to have a solid written estimate, not a verbal hand waving. And I like to get a few other estimates when it comes to this much money, maybe he was afraid I would find out he was a wee bit over priced. Anyhow, he indicated he didn't really want to work on this late model 900 and was probably assuming I was going to be a real pain in the rear. He suggested that I take the car to the dealer.
So, off I went to get another indie to look at it. I called one and got the line that the guy who needed to look at it was out, and that I should take to car to the dealer (did indie number 1 call indie number 2 and tell them to beware of a 900 V6 looking for cooling system work? Makes me wonder). So I called a 3rd indie, they are looking at the car on 7/10. I also called the dealer, and the dealer can't take the car until 7/16. But the dealer said they would inspect all the hoses and only replace to ones that looked bad from visual observation. Is this a good idea? I'm some what inclined to change them all assuming that if one is going the others won't be far behind.
Anyway, sorry for the long post again, I just wanted to blow off some steam (pun intended :-) and get thoughts on this situation...
