I have a '98 SE 3 door. I have 17" rims and lowered the body and inch or so using Eibach springs and Koni shocks. I LOVE the combination - the car handles well and corners wonderfully. The Eibachs are definitely stiffer than stock and give a slightly harsher ride with the 17" rims and tires at 36lb/sq.in. Some of the other spring options (Abbott) are much stiffer and may well give a pretty harsh ride unless roads in your area are smoother than here in Oregon. In the past there has been debate on the bbs as to whether to leave in the OEM shocks with most favoring changing out the shocks to Koni at the same time.
As to the ability of the convertible chassis to handle them - I'll leave that to someone more knowledgeable . . .
