NEED YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS...Have a beautiful Imola Red 1994 SE turbo coupe 5 spd., looks great from inside and out. This was the worst of the lot of NG 900's, but I have had quite good service from mine and pretty much everything still works on the car. I have 134k on the car now, runs as good as ever. I have owned the car for 6 years and bought with 42k on it. The transmission works well, engine does not burn oil, brakes are good and new tires on it in last 5k. This is what I have done repair wise to date;
WATER PUMP (2)
WASHER PUMPS (3)
UPGRADED SAAB SHIFT LINKAGE
RELACED ALL VACUUM, COOLANT AND TURBO HOSES
CV JOINT BOOT
FRONT AND REAR BRAKES ONCE EACH
REAR MOTOR MOUNT
REAR SHOCKS
EXHAUST SYSTEM
CLUTCH CABLES (3)
DI CARTRIDGE
SERP BELT/ PULLEYS (2)
So I have had better luck than most.
This car is worth probably 2.5k, or more to me than anyone else. It is a third car used for a daily driver. But it is on it's original clutch and leaks oil badly from the rear seal. The clutch slips a bit and wont last much longer so seals, clutch, cable, etc. would need to be replaced at an estimated cost of 1,000.00. The front suspension is all original and getting bad, I can see a minimum of control arm bushings, struts and mounts to fix things up at another 700.00. Blown out door speaker another 200.00 (pr.). Front brake rotors have warped and need replacement (100.00)(I have pads already). Valve cover gasket leaks badly (50.00). My ACC display is beginning some sort of pixel creep but my SID is good. AC works but marginal over 90F. If I fix all this and my indie doesn't mess things up with the clutch and the suspension I guess I could go another 65k to 200,000k or more with these repairs.
All in all, I need to put around 2k, and some of my own effort to extend the life of this car and restore it. I realize these repairs are not going to make the car worth any more. But the insurance and taxes are cheap and I like the car. I could drive it another couple of years (before it needs its next DI) amortizing the cost of these repairs it would come out to around 100.00 a month. Of course it will once again need new tires, serp belt and pulleys, coolant and brake flushes in this time fram as well as other maintenance. The car wont be worth much less in two years than it is now as it is almost fully depreciated.
Am I crazy for even thing about this? Should I sell it now cheap, or donate it to chraity instead?
