The concept got started in Germany in the 1970's, when there was a lot of economic strife, Labor relations turmoil, and a growth in the Environmentalist movement following the oil crisis. It was thought a smooth way for a CEO or other bigwig to be discreet about the fact that his Merc. S-class was a megabuck, gas-guzzling 500 SE, and attempt to let the underlings think it may be a mere 280.... I think it then expanded to those who wanted a stealth look, to attract less attention from thieves/police/other drivers. There was a point, perhaps around 1980, when some car names got to be so long that there was barely room on the trunk for all the badges... Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9? or Lancia Delta HF 4x4 Turbo? Since then, they've gotten shorter, many turbos don't even have a turbo badge any more... I think the debadged look is considered cleaner and less pretentious by many...
