Here's the concept I follow. Hopefully it'll help a bit:
If the car is "lightly soiled", meaning there is only light dust, fingerprints, a little road grime, some bug guts or little spots of bird doo, I'll wipe it down with a quick detailing spray and a couple of microfiber towels. There is no real dirt on the car but it does have some crud from normal driving. These residues don't need water to flush or rinse them off. A simple wipe down is fine to get the car looking sharp again.
If the car shows real dirt, like it was driven in rain or in a dirty environment, or the car has collected some real crud from driving, I'll wash it or at least bust out the hose and rinse it off. When you talk about having sand and dirt on the car, that's something I'd rinse off instead of trying to wipe off with a towel. If it's just concentrated areas that have the accumulated dirt, just rinse those areas and use the detail spray for the rest of the car.
Detail sprays and/or spray waxes are great for maintaining that "Just Detailed" look. Many mfr's of waxes and sealants offer a companion spray product that adds a boost to their products. You don't have to stick with that same product mfr to get good results, but if you really like the wax you're using, you'll prolly like their spray wax or detail spray stuff.
Anyway, that's how I play it. Everyone is a little different. For example, I have a friend who wipes down his car with a damp chamois every day. He doesn't use wax or detail spray, he just keeps it wiped down with a regular wash every 10-15 days. His car always looks great (eventhough I've tried to convert him to microfiber and detail spray).
Hope this helps.
