That Dr. Color Chip mentioned looks very promising.
I've always done the technique your friend mentioned. If you plan to go that route, be sure that you use a hard foam rubber sanding block or small piece of wood as a backer behind the sandpaper. Don't just use your finger as a backer or you may get a depression in the area. Basically you want to sand down the high spots on the touch-ups so they are flush with the original paint surface. Don't be alarmed that you are using sandpaper. 2000 wet paper is such a fine grit that you'll barely leave a haze. There won't be any deep scratches to rub out with the compound.
