I think the first things you have to decide is whether you want to do this primarily as a hobby or really try to make money at it. This decision will probably take you down a specific path. The hobbyist doesn't have to worry about a lot of issues since he's doing it for fun and a little $$. The business man has quite a few obstacles to overcome and critical decisions to make.
If you are good at detailing now and maybe are doing a few cars on the side, my suggestion would be to try and grow your clientele from there. It will be much easier to jump into detailing as a business if you have existing customers. Whether mobile or fixed location, you'll have recurring costs so you'll need repeat customers.
Instead of listening to me ramble on, here's couple websites you should check out:
http://www.rightlook.com
http://www.detailking.com
Both companies can help you build your business and they offer turn-key solutions for the detailer.
You should learn as much as possible about auto paint and how to correct problems. The best seminar I know of is called Prep Excellence. Here's a link: http://www.autoint.com/prepexcellence_school.htm
As far as the best combo for detailing, its a little hard to say as this won't work the same on every car, but my current regimen is working great:
1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Clean paint with Meguiars #83
4. Polish paint with P21S polish
5. Seal with Zaino
Meguiar's is a great company that offers lots of excellent products and has name recognition which will resonate with your customers. So does 3M. I don't think you can go wrong with either brand.
There are many suppliers that cater strictly to the professional instead of the consumer. One Grand, the makers of Blitz wax, is one. So is Pro Inc., Malco, and Hi Temp Products. Do some research on these companies to see what they offer.
I hope all this helps. Lemme know if there's anything else I can do.
