I guess what bothers me about BMW's styling is that it is going for STYLE. Whereas BMW's of the past have had a sort of minimalist chiseled look, with simple, if not pretty, lines, the new ones are getting swoopier and goofier. I remember mistaking the old boxy E30 three series for Camry's from behind as a kid... but you would never mistake one for a Camry behind the wheel, and that's what mattered. Form followed function, and the driving experience was really nice: it didn't need a huge hood scoop and twin white stripes to look fast... it was fast, and loved the turns. I had a jaded view of the little BMW cars as the chariots of yuppie scum, but when I got the chance to borrow one, I knew it was the real thing. The image problem was with a large segment of the buyers, NOT the car.
I guess the BMW mark did attract posers from the beginning, but now those posers seem to run the market: they all want their friends and co-workers to know that they drive a BMW from miles away, and the styling department is happy to comply.
Just look at how many big blue and white badges are slapped onto the new Z-4: front, back, wheels, sides... might as well just put huge signs on the doors that says "NOT A MIATA... I PAID $$$$ FOR THIS SHINY BMW". It just doesn't seem like it's about the driving anymore.
Best,
Lutfisk
