I bet it keeps track of each key individually. That's why there's a limit (4?) to how many keys you can have.
So when you use it, the key identifies itself to the TWICE computer. If that code is one of the 4 acceptable codes, then TWICE accepts it and increments the code for that key. It doesn't increment the codes for the other 3 keys.
