To go from 15" to 17", the tires must be properly proportioned for your car. Properly done, the car will sit the same because overall diameter of rim/tire will be same. The rim will be 2" larger (or 1" larger radius) and the 17" tire proportions will compensate by have a 1" shorter sidewall.
Original intent of low-profile (short sidewall) tires was performance. Less sidewall means less sidewall flex in turns resulting in quicker/tighter turning response. Today many cars wear low prof tires for the appearance. Realize the 1" lower sidewall means less cushion means firmer/harsher ride. Also the 17" tire will probably be a higher performance tire so the rubber compound will be softer. That gives you better grip (for fast cornering) but also wears out quicker. Bottom line is if you're not interested in driving aggressively and if you prefer a smooth bump-absorbing ride, stick with 15". Or 16" as a compromise.
