Where do you live, and where do you travel? If you're traveling close to home, look at local plans. You should be able to get a decent plan for $30/month that includes free long distance, free nights and weekends, and at least 200 minutes allowance for the rest of the time. AT&T has good local plans; Verizon does not.

If you travel further from home, look at national plans. I only know AT&T and Verizon well; AT&T starts at $30 for 300 minutes + unlimited nights and weekends + free long-distance from your calling area. Outside your calling area, long-distance and roaming charges are billed by the minute. Verizon has a larger calling area for the same plan, but it costs $35 a month. Look at the coverage maps on their websites to determine whether the extra $5 is worth it to you.

Verizon also offers a SingleRate plan, which means that you don't pay long distance or roaming charges from anywhere in the country (your calling area is anywhere in the US that you can get a signal). If the areas covered in the maps aren't good enough for you, this may be. However, for $35/month, you get only 150 minutes, and I believe nights and weekends count against that.

AT&T offers $20/month plans, but the local one doesn't get you long distance, and none of them get you unlimited nights/weekends.
