Wow! I really appreciate all of the fine advise you all gave. Glad I posted. You've given me a great head start on finding plans. CWilson's interesting observations about Nokia working better with ATT explains problems others have expressed with their Motorolas. Also lots of specific advise.

I've been googling, and it looks like Tracfone and others are offering prepaid minutes, including phone for as little as $25 every 60days. That is only 60min in 60days, but you can buy time as needed. And it appears that the service can be terminated at any time. It may be a chicken start, but I really don't want to be spending $40+ per mo on a service that I'm hoping to keep limited to travel and emergency. Now to study the details and listen for more advise!
