Think you are right. You take something like the new Chrysler Pacifica, and its shortcomings aside, you have a wagon with some height that appears to have some real utility while still being a car. I think this may well be the type of family vehicle that will ultimately replace the SUV as the typical family hauler.
Like you, We bought an Exploder (in 98) because we didnt' want a minivan and had 2 kids, one which was doing dog showing which requires a lot of stuff in the back. Plus, we often had her friend and her 2 dogs as well. The extra height of a SUV made it possible to take 2 or 3 dogs in crates to a show, and 3 kids. Impossible in a wagon. Still, I felt bad about it until I found most people showing dogs had full size vans or even motor homes.
We are looking forward to bidding it farewell in a few more years, and my wife is already thinking about alternatives, with a 9-5 high on the list.
