My buddy's 99 or 00 Jetta sucks down oil Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] (#22) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Randy Thatcher) on Tue, 30 Sep 2003 01:12:59 In Reply to: OT: VW BB like this one?, Sean H, Mon, 29 Sep 2003 12:34:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
He put in 2 qts one time. I don't know how long it was between oil changes, but he freaked when he looked at the dipstick. I saw the oil fill cap and it had some nasty gummy looking goo on it. I thought maybe a dried up oil and coolant mix. His dealer gave him some dumb answer, too. The real tragedy is he's in a 4 month lease with a 2yr/24k warranty. How's that for a scam?
When a dealer says it "absorbs" oil, I'd love to hear the details of the explanation. Yes, engines have seals, and seals may be porous. But 1 quart a week porous? No, that's a hole. That's a blown seal. That's a head gasket job. That's burning oil. The cylinders would look like swiss cheese if they could absorb a quart a week.
My feeling is that powertrain and electrical quality VW provides is trash, and I don't know why people buy 'em. Sure, styling is nice. They seem to attract a young crowd. Probably when you buy one and wise up to what a maintenance nightmare you bought, you'll have have a better job to buy the audi or bmw you wanted when you got the VW. They seem to run great for a year or 2, then start to fall apart.
A friend can't wait to get rid of his passat wagon. Another friend hated his beetle. Another dude's jetta blew a shifter shaft seal after like 15k. My 13 year old 125k SAAB is weeping a little at the shifter shaft seal, but no need to replace...
I can't think of anyone who has owned a VW in recent years who has had a happy experience. I hope your gf gets it all taken care of. If you can get the dealer to solve the root cause, you'll be in good shape. But I doubt that happens, knowing how most dealers are.
