Thinking a little better of it, I'll agree about Unbreakable for the most part. Shymalan's incorporation of some of the legacy his best cinematic predecessors (like focusing on the reflections in the doorknob in that one 6th sense scene) is one of the things that makes me enjoy his films all the more. Signs would have been better if we'd never seen the aliens onscreen.
Thinking about the 30-year factor. It's probably just that we grow older and feeling of the new, more polished, more "real" culture overrides the feeling of wonder that we had when the 30-year old things were new.
You're probably right about looking back at the Matrix trilogy in 2030. We'll look at it as being preachy and overwrought. It's good right now. I do hope that cinema will get back to The Story being the most important part of the film.
