To put it simply, they (MS) don't care. With such a "large percentage" (Mr. Gates doesn't believe, in his own words, under oath, that he has a 'monopoly') of the personal computer market, there's no incentive to make a better product. By their own admission, security isn't a priority.
I've been around computers since 1978. I've used punched cards, reels of magnetic tape, 8" floppies, blah blah blah. (I can also tell you that in the late '70s, the thought that our programs would still be running in 2000 was 'ridiculous'. I was quietly amused at the furor raised over the "Y2K" fiasco.) Anyway, what have _I_ learned from over 25 years of being around the *$#&@ things?
Get a Macintosh.
Seriously!
Zero viruses, unparalleled integration of hardware & software, "Most" programs you want are available (hey, if you wanna' play games, get a PlayStation!), none of this spyware crappola, no hijacking your computer - gang, the _experience_ of using a Mac everyday is like driving a SAAB instead of a Daewoo. You can get good OR you can get cheap - everyone must decide what they must live with. Personally, I have deadlines to meet and thwarting a new virus some high school kid wrote doesn't pay the bills. (Yes, I know there IS anti-virus software for the Mac but until I actually hear of a Mac virus, barring the QuickTime worm of mid-1998, I'm not worried about it.) Now, more than ever, Macs are easier to integrate into PC networks so even if you follow your own road, don't worry that you'll be locked out.
If you're stuck with Windows, try eTrust and non-M$ browsers like Opera (or Netscape if you've got the speed & memory). Give yourself a fighting chance....until you get your first Mac. ;) For Heaven's sake, do NOT use Outlook Express! EVER!! Opera has a fine e-mail client and "The Bat" is very good too.
Sorry if this sounds like a big ol' soapbox/axe to grind but I hope some of you see value in so many years computing experience. I'm sure Windows advocates will have their say.
Hope this helps,
Joe <- computer geek since '78, Mac fanatic since '93...still miss my '87 9kT
