Lutz has issue with almost everything about GM and all its pieces. And he likes to shoot off his mouth, his comments often seem to be tailored to dare the Titanic-sized company to turn on a dime. He's ripped Saturn for being bland so often and so badly that he's had to apologize. So don't feel singled out.
Here's another Lutz quote: “The thinking was Saab is unique as a brand and should be left alone. But if you do major component sharing, you can still give a car individuality and maintain the essence of the brand.”
Not sure how I feel about that but the plan is to sell enough cars to keep the make around. GM's idea, without analyzing good/bad, is that Saab needs to use more GM technology (GM Europe -- before y'all start typing things with 'buick' in them) to get models moving faster, rather than rolling their own everything in-house. They use VERY little GM technology compared to how much Ford is in a Jag or Ford/Mitsu is in a Volvo. (Or MB is in a Crossfire, etc.)
Despite what it may have sounded like, Lutz wants Saab to borrow more, not less, because it costs Saab less and therefore makes the holes in GM's wallet smaller. Saab is PRICEY to keep around, and the diesel fiasco/bad exchange rate made it burn much worse recently.
But more simply, you don't let them introduce two new offerings, in new segments, if you have your hand on the plug.
Enjoy the cars, let Bob do the worrying.
