Hey there...
I'm an avid guitarist actually. Any guitar can be kept in great condition no matter the age. One really important thing is what type of climate the instrument has been in over the years. I moved from a humid area (CT) to a very dry one (CO) and my guitars just went to hell. In dry areas, there should always be a humidifier damp at all times in the case with it. This keeps the body on an acoustic from sinking and the finish on an electric from cracking. Also, keeps the neck very healthy. That's point number 1.
Now...also take in mind that a guitar has to be setup correctly according to what gauge string you are comfortable with. The neck and bridge need to be setup accordingly. Any reputable guitar shop will know this.
As far as brands...I have a Washburn acoustic and love it...best one I've owned. They're not the best, and far from the worst guitars...but definately hold their ground. The Falcon was a very unique guitar...I'm almost positive that it was modeled after an Ibanez Artist. Neck through body on that though...instead of a bolt on. Make sure that neck is up to par though because if it's not and has never been maintained, you'll never keep correct tuning or intonation on it. That's the only downfall to a neckthough, otherwise you can't beat the way they feel as far as they play.
Not exactally sure what your budget is, but if you want to stay in say a $250-$400 range, I would consider Ibanez or even a used American Fender Strat (if you can find one). I have an American Deluxe and that's my other other baby...first one being my wife, second being my Aero :)
There's really so many to chose from. I'd suggest taking a look at http://www.musiciansfriend.com for ideas as far as what you like in styles and look. Then compare them to reviews at http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data4/#man That's an excellent site for info on any musical product. That link is direct to the guitar manufacturers section.
Feel free to email me with any questions as I'd be happy to help. Also, http://www.olga.net is a great place for tablature for almost any musician/band you can think of.
Good luck!
