You'll get a much nicer instrument is you buy used, even if it's in mint condition. I once scored an Alembic bass guitar for $500 in mint condition from the original owner who shelled out $1200 for it (he had a car accident, needed money asap!) Strats have a longer scale length than Les Pauls, etc. so your wife should try several models to see what fits her the best.
I personally would take a G&L over a Fender any time (take this for what it's worth, I'm a former bass player turned occasional classical guitarist). G&L are also Leo Fender designed, are made in America, and are very high quality. I played a G&L L-2000 bass for years. What a solidly made, great sounding instrument. Don't discount non-Fender/Gibson brands like Peavey, Ernie Ball, Carvin, etc. as well!
