The engine's braking torque is much lower than it's WOT torque, so wear on the pinion & bearing shouldn't be a big deal. The forces are in the opposite direction, tho. So comparing the amount of wear is more complicated than that. So if the wear happens on the opposite gear-teeth-faces then it really doesn't add up together with acceleration. Bearing wear probably does add up...
I engine-brake all the time, but I often just leave it in gear rather than downshifting. Wear on the synchros happens when you shift into the gear. NOT when you release the clutch. When you release the clutch without rev-matching, you're putting stress on gearbox components & the clutch. So why not rev-match? It's pretty easy.
Engine braking uses less gas, too. The FI shuts off; zero fuel use. When you disengage the clutch the engine drops to idle & the fuel comes back on.
