What damages can you show after the event? What shape are the engine and tranny in now? How much to repair? Gross negligence on the part of mechanics, but discovered quickly. You will need to show facts of what damage has occurred to an 11 year old car and that it came from their errors and not the result of preexisting wear and tear. Causation is usually a tough question in such cases. You'll like need to spend money on your own mechanic if push comes to shove. A governmental regulatory body overseeing repair shops, if California has one, may be your best bet, short of small claims court as your last resort.

BTW, the "Better Business Bureau", when they exist at all, is a merchants group, usually part of the chamber of commerce. They are almost never an effective advocate for a consumer,and they almost never let you know about a bad business. They do convey complaints to the merchant in the hope that the merchant might do something so that business in general does not look bad. Their member interests are the bottom line as they pay the bills. There is almost never any enforcement mechanism at all. It does provide a way for a consumer to vent, and who knows, the complaint might get acted on.
