Was visiting my brother in Chapel Hill, NC for the weekend. We decide to take his GMC Safari for an oil change at JL. I follow in the Saab. We drop the van off, tell them we will be back, and make a quick run to the grocery store. This JL pulls your car in and out for you.
We get back to JL, and a manager tells us to come around back, they need to show us something on the van. The guy pulling the van in the garage hit the brick planter next to the garage door, and it has put a huge gash in the passenger rear fender. They have us come in and fill out some form about the incident that basically states our version of what happened. I ask where on the form is the manager going to write what happened and sign off on it. He says he doesn't do that. I press him on it, and he says someone from the company will call us. He "didn't see it happen" so he can't put anything in writing.
Another customer watching the whole thing suggests I call the cops to fill out a police report. I say, "That's a great idea!" While waiting for the officer to arrive, a "friend" of one of the employees takes me aside and says to please not use his name, but he has something to show me. He points out the broken brick on the planter, as well as the blue paint (blue van) on the side of the planter. I thank him and promise to keep him out of it.
Cop shows up, asks me what happens, I tell her everything to that point..show her the red brick in the gash in the van, as well as the blue paint on the brick planter near the building, and she says, "Don't worry, they will absolutely be paying for this." She calls the manager over, who is nervous as hell...calls her "Sir" by accident, which goes over real well :)...and essentially tells him that she thinks he is being dishonest, and explains that JL is obviously at fault, and that her report will reflect that.
Long story short...brother gets a check for 1100 dollars from JL's insurance company, and when he swung by the JL a few months later for the heck of it he saw that customers have to pull their vehicles in and out, and that big yellow foam bumpers have been installed on all of the brick planters and building corners.
So...stay away from the Jiffy Lube on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, NC! I was also saddened to see the local oil change place in my hometown in NY that always did a great job when I lived there was recently taken over by Jiffy Lube. I'll never go back.
I have had good luck with the Valvoline Instant Oil Change in my town in MD. You can stand there and watch them work, or sit in a waiting room with floor to ceiling windows and watch their every move. The guys remember my Saab every time I come in (not too many of 'em where I live) and are friendly and seem to know what they are doing. Hope others have had similar experiences.
