Living in greater Detroit area and transporting my youngest to RPI in Troy, NY for the past four years, we took the I-90 route on all but one trip. One time only we went thru Canada - got rearended by a drunk driver in Windsor at midnight and I had to physically drag two cops out of the adjacent Timmy Horton's Donut Shop to investigate the crash! They only cooperated after they heard the ambulance responding to the drunk's injuries and thought they would "look bad" if other officers saw them stuffing cruellers in their faces through the Donut Shop windows!
The route thru Canada is slightly shorter but you will have two border crossings (passports are now required to enter Canada) and Canadian expressways are notoriously poorly marked. You can easily loose whatever time the shorter route saves you with time delays caused by Homeland Security forces or by missing your exit.
Avoid I-86 (still shows as Hwy 17 on most maps) across southern New York. We took that route to Ithaca to visit the Cornell campus and were surprised to discover no gas stations open after 8pm along the entire route. Luckily we filled up in Erie, PA.
Cambridge, eh. Harvard or MIT?
