This configuration is the same as the first production front wheel drive car, the Citroen Traction Avant introduced in the 30's, followed by several successful Citroen models, although not high volume sellers in North America.
This configuration also helps weight distribution by moving the engine (partly) behind the front wheels.
It seems 'backwards' only in comparison to front engine/rear wheel drive configuration, but is it really 'backwards' or was Citroen 'forward' thinking with this layout?
By today's standards Citroen was the 'winner' of the ultimate configuration with the front wheel drive layout, albeit not the transversal configuration.
P.S. I would love to own a 'classic' Citroen Traction Avant along side my 3 Saab's.
