I've stopped herding VWs (at least for the moment) but the coilpack issues and some other probs seem to have been addressed. My 78 Scirocco and 86 GTI were great cars. They had some issues but never failed me. Put 150K hard miles (lots of commuting) on each and they were always fun and generally held up well.
I looked at VWs when deciding on a car last year and found that at 6'2" and 200 lbs, I don't fit all that well in Jettas and Beetles (wanted a turbo). The seat bottoms were too short and no amount of fiddling made it comfortable. But the fit and finish seemed fine and I liked the cars. But I do some longish road trips on business, so comfort was essential. I did fit well in the Passat, liked the car, but decided to spend less and bought a 96 90000 CSE.
But I still think a VW is out there on the horizon, perhaps a Passat wagon (or a 9-5 wagon or Suby Outback).
