in a manner similar to the sun, with the exception that the moon is our satellite and we are a satellite of the sun. The position of the moon in the sky is a factor of both its orbital path and the earth's rotation.
I think that if you look at the moon long enough tonight, it will eventually move low on the horizon before moonset. It won't be a tiny sliver for a few more weeks, because it is waxing right now. I think it is very close to being a perfect half-moon.
