so the differences over a few days can be substantial. The full cycle--dark to full-- is about 28.5 days, so even a couple of days will show big differences. Also, it's elevation above the horizon changes every day of its cycle and will NOT be the same on two consecutive days, even at the exact same time of day. Before GPS there was celestial navigation and there are actual tables that account for these and other variables so a ship's navigator can take lunar sightings with a sextant and do some math to help determine the position of a ship on the ocean. Multiple sightings are required to get a position. The same thing is done with stars, planets and the sun.
