Same here. 802.11 is great if you live in an apartment or small house. Anything larger than that you're pushing the limits of the technology. My kids' computers are on Linksys receivers (one is USB (avoid) and the other is PCI. They talk to a Linksys router/hub. My office is in the basement, the PCI PC is2 rooms away on the same floor, and the USB PC is 2 floors straight up.
In my view, neither is reliable enough for business work. Signal strength is 50% to 60%. The USB one requires a manual connect most of the time (I run WEP) so I have taught my 12 year old to do it :-). The classic symptom is that the wireless node finds the hub and talks to it, but NOT to the internet (over broadband).
The signal extender does *not* seem to work as per tomsnetworking.com.
The signal boost hack seems possible to older firmware machines only.
A better set of antennae may help, but you're back into the same issues (reliability) which do not seem to be signal strength related.
Personal suggestion. Run the wire. In my case the wire is already there but I'm too busy/lazy :-) to connect them, it's this winter's project.
