OT: My turn for a home wireless network question....

I tried the Linksys system and I got very limited range from the wireless access point and router to other part of the house.
The router sits in my basement office, I have two computer on the floor above it. In term of distance, the furthest computer is less than 75 ft or so. My house isn't that big but I guess it was well constructed with all kinds of steel beams running across the basement and not to mention thick gage HVAC ducts and iron sewage pipes and lead shower pans etc....
I really don't want to use a range extender, any other suggestions other than moving the router upstairs but that would leave me disconnected from the world or I have to run a Cat 5/6 wire across the house. I believe someone wrote some aftermarket firmware that would boost signal for the Linksys and I haven't tried that yet. Apparently the power output of the wireless network is limited by the FCC hence the somewhat limited range.
Oh, anyone tried the Linksys USB network adapter ? It hangs both my computers when I tried to shut them off, as with many Help lines, Linksys is supposed to be good but they offered little advice.
Any other wireless networking hardware I should try ?
