Hi J
I've had four dogs of my own, although not retrievers. Mine are shelties, but they are people-oriented like retrievers. Ditto on a puppy being lonely, they are just babies. When I got my first dog I lived alone, so I joined it every lunch. That helped, but Cicco still developed some neurotic behaviors, like chewing the window sill and door mat. I think if you get two dogs they will not become so people-oriented as you might like. They probably will turn to each other and they and you will miss out on the great human/dog relationship. Dogs are not like cats. If you can return at lunch, great. Good luck
